What is Regional inter-connectivity development?
This model addressing infrastructure connectivity constraints in and across villages, and enhance socio-economic development in the region. These infrastructure facilities and services will help to promote rural economy in many ways. They are as follows;
- Bringing economic benefits – increase in productions, better prices etc.
- Reducing expenditure and saving time in getting various services – health care, education, agricultural extension, market facilities.
- Improving living conditions through wider and better coverage of essential services. Therefore Interconnectivity development programme envisages development of clusters of villages.
The programme will strengthen the community by forming subcommittees in order to undertake inter village development activities such as rural roads, small irrigation, electrification, drinking water, rural health, marketing and cultural centers etc. under the Pradeshiya Sabah Act. Ultimately, main aspects of rural economy and quality of life of the rural communities will be improved.
Therefore, to open wider space for rural economies to expand, it has to go beyond the village limits. In CDD model, communities have proved their strength in optimal resource management in intra village development. There are problems effecting more than one village and hitherto solutions are needed to involve group of villages, where wider knowledge and experiences could be utilized for the overall development of cluster of villages. Therefore, it is necessary to focus on higher level such as Pradeshiya Sabha, which could coordinate groups of villages.
This chapter is devoted for discussing the development of the political participatory GIS system for the regional development. Using of RS, GPS, and GIS technology has changed the development concept at the Pradesiya Sabha level. Political leaders leant to interpret the satellite images, GPS navigation and map reading after this practice. Final output helps to create a map culture at the PS to village level.
